Training and Workshops
How
can youth handle bullying, intimidation and threats of
violence?
Fit4Defense provides a
wide variety of workshops and customized trainings for
children and youth in schools, recreational centers and
social service organizations.
Fit4Defense teaches empowerment through
assertiveness, self-defense and fitness training for the
purpose of the prevention of violence, street safety and
the development of life skills. It utilizes an effective, standardized curriculum in a dynamic and
exciting environment. Classes are being offered in elementary, middle and secondary schools as
well as for high-risk youth groups in community
settings.
Self-awareness
training serves to counteract psychological feelings of
‘powerlessness’ for kids. It offers a means for them
to increase control over all aspects of life. This is
accomplished by enhancing attitudes, confidence and
self-esteem, which can be reinforced by healthier
lifestyle choices. The objectives of imparting self
awareness/self defence understanding is not merely to
teach physical skills that would enable a person to
defend themselves in a confrontation. Rather, it is to
permanently change attitudes, behaviours and awareness
to prevent the likelihood of victimization and thus
avoid confrontation.

Instructor
Training
This
Fit4Defense
Training Manual
is being introduced with instructor-training workshops
province-wide utilizing a ‘train the trainers’ model
for recreational and youth workers, teachers, martial
arts instructors and other persons working with young
persons. From these workshops instructors are selected
to pilot “Fit4Defense" sessions
as part of their ongoing physical education or social
programs with the assistance of a program mentor. This
builds the capacity within local communities so that the
benefits of violence prevention and assertiveness
training are sustained.
